Fishing Safety

iStock_000004551850SmallFishing is one of the great American pastimes. It’s relaxing, fun, and a great way for families to bond and spend time together. While you’re waiting to reel in the big one, there are some safety tips to remember to get the most out of your fishing trip.

Keep these tips in mind to be safe while fishing:

  • First things first—wear plenty of sunscreen! The water reflects sunlight and can give you a sunburn more quickly than usual. Stay in the shade if you can and bring a hat.
  • Let an adult help you bait your hook and untangle your line.
  • Be careful when casting your line—don’t let your hook hit anyone.
  • When you catch a fish, let an adult help you get the hook out so you don’t accidentally cut yourself. Also, some fish have sharp fins, so be very careful!

Going fishing with friends and family might be some of your favorite memories when you get older, so take care and have fun while you’re on the water or sitting by the stream. Remember to be patient—the fish only bite when they’re ready. As always, let’s stay safe together!
